Do Fireplaces Increase Overall Home Value?

  • Building

  • Home Value

The answer is quite simple - yes they do!

Despite being one of the oldest forms of comfort and respite places in the home, the fireplace reigns supreme as one of the go-to features homebuyers of all ages look for when shopping for their next home.

In fact, in a survey of 2,000 homeowners and homebuyers, 80% of respondents said indoor and outdoor fireplaces were shown to increase a home’s value between $1,000-$4,999 dollars.

Indoor vs. Outdoor

In 2015 Realtor.com found that an indoor fireplace was the #1 feature most often mentioned in home listings and 60% of homeowners and homebuyers said they definitely look for a fireplace when purchasing a home. But per recent trends in architectural landscape, it appears that outdoor fireplaces are becoming just as popular as their indoor counterparts.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, outdoor fireplaces can increase a home’s value by an average of $3,500. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of cozying up to a fire sharing stories and making memories with friends and family alike. And per a survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2016, fireplaces and fire puts were named the number 1 outdoor design element homeowners are looking for to upgrade their outdoor living spaces.

Gas vs. Wood-Burning

While gas-burning fireplaces have certainly evolved in recent years and grabbed more consumers’ attention, 60% of those surveyed still love the timelessness of a wood-burning fireplace and equate it with luxurious living.

So if you’re thinking of building a home, think about how a wood-burning masonry fireplace can help increase your enjoyment of your home today and the value of your home tomorrow.
